Istanbul Cardiology
Cardiology is a medical specialty concerned with the medical and interventional treatment of the heart and circulatory system diseases. Cardiology was formerly a sub-discipline of internal medicine, but now it is operating as a separate medical branch. Interventional cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology are the sub-branches of cardiology.
The Cardiology Department works on the diagnosis and treatment of the following diseases:
Hypertension,
Atherosclerotic heart diseases (coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction-heart attack),
Rheumatic valve diseases,
Stenosis and insufficiency of the aortic valve,
Mitral valve diseases,
Pericardial diseases,
Heart failure,
Heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias).
Some of the diagnostic tools used by the Cardiology Department are as follows:
Electrocardiography (ECG),
Heart stress test (exercise electrocardiogram)
Rhythm Holter,
Angiography of the coronary and cardiac cavities,
Coronary angioplasty and stenting,
Balloon valvuloplasty,
Electrophysiological study,
Arrhythmia treatment,
Ablation,
Transvenous pacemaker/ICD extraction,
TAVI.
Coronary Intensive Care Units are where patients with life-threatening risks (having heart attack) that may require emergency intervention are monitored. The patients admitted to this department are closely monitored in terms of their heart rhythms, blood pressure, pulse rate and blood oxygen levels.
