Atakum
Atakum is the central district of Samsun. Atakum became a district within the scope of the draft law that foresees 43 new districts. It starts on the Samsun-Sinop highway, 5 km from the city center. It covers the distance to the border of Atakent town. The lands that Balaç Village used as fields in the past formed the general settlement area of the district. The sea is shallow and it has a wide sandy beach. The old name of Atakum is Matasyon. Since Atakum is a newly structured district spread over a flatter area compared to other residential areas of Samsun, there is a more planned urban structure in the district. Its population is increasing rapidly. Atakum has become the district with the highest population growth rate in Samsun. The population of Atakum is 63,712 according to 2004. According to the 2010 census, it is 123,904. Atakum district is located within the adjacent areas of Atakum Town Municipality, which was established in 1994. Metin Burma was the mayor of the district for the first 2 terms. Adem Bektaş served as Mayor between 2004 and 2009. In the elections of March 29, 2009, Metin Burma was re-elected as president. Atakum, which was Samsun's summer and summer resort in the past, has now become a central district by becoming a livable region in winter. The difference of Atakum district compared to other districts; Summer tourism is very developed and its beaches and shores are as good as the Mediterranean. With the new law, Atakum has gained district status and local government structuring has been started with surrounding municipalities and towns. Atakent, Kurupelit, İncesu, Altınkum, Çatalçam and Taflan; It is connected to Atakum municipality.
