It is located at the foot of Yamanlar Mountain, 38 degrees north latitude and 27 degrees east longitude. It is 8 km northeast of Izmir city center and 3 km east of Izmir Bay. The municipality was established in 1882 and became a district in 1957. Its surface area is 220 km².
The main campus of Ege University and Ege University Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Turkey, are located in this district. The Selçuk Yaşar campus of Yaşar University is also located in Bornova Ağaçlıyol.
In addition to two large military units, the fact that Bornova is located at the center of the Izmir-Istanbul, Izmir-Ankara, Izmir-Aydın and Izmir-Çanakkale highway networks, the extension of the subway to Bornova in 2000, the location of the Izmir Bus Station in the district, the designation of the Bornova-Kavaklıdere-Işıkkent triangle as an industrial zone and the presence of 4 industrial sites within the residential area are among the factors that will affect the development of Bornova today and in the future. Kavaklıdere, Çiçekli, Kayadibi and other neighborhoods continue to be the lungs of Izmir.
