Harran

Harran is a district of Şanlıurfa province. It is a district close to the Syrian border. It is 44 kilometers away from Şanlıurfa.

It is one of the world's first science centers (such as Athens, Mardin, Şanlıurfa). The first university established in the world is here. Harran University in Şanlıurfa is also named after this district.

It is one of the ancient settlements of Northern Mesopotamia. Almost all of the people of the district are Turkish citizens of Arab origin. It is one of the oldest still inhabited cities in the world.

While Harran had the status of "district" until 1946, in that year it was transformed into a "district center" and connected to Akçakale district. In 1987, it was again transformed into a district with Law No. 3392.
