İskilip

İskilip is a district of Çorum province. It is also the name of a historical geography. During the Hittite period, the region where İskilip and Tosya district of Kastamonu are located was called Tarittara or Turmitta. Later, it was named in different ways such as İskila, Blocium/Bloacium, Iskelib, İskelib, İmad (Direklibel). During the Ottoman Period after the Suleiman the Magnificent, his name was also mentioned as Esculape in Western - especially French - sources. In history, the word İskilip appears for the first time in the form of "iškila-bi" in the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the Sumerian epics.
