Kale (Malatya)
Kale is a district of Malatya province
Its old name is "Izollu". It got this new name from an old castle in the village. It is the richest and greenest district of Malatya. The Pirot mound in the district, which is now under the Karakaya Dam Lake, shows that this region has been inhabited since ancient times. It is also stated in Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname that the Izol tribe living in the region today migrated to this region from Şanlıurfa in the 1600s.
The district is locally known by the name Izollu. The Izollu region was originally divided into two as Elazığ and Malatya sides due to the Euphrates River passing through the middle. The local people introduce themselves as the Izol tribe.
The district is located at the 45th km of Malatya-Elazig highway and Kömürhan Bridge is within the borders of the district. The population is approximately 4 thousand and has a scattered settlement. The main source of livelihood of the district is apricot and there is also a small amount of strawberry production and animal husbandry. While the district was previously a sub-district of the center, it gained district status with the law enacted in 1990.
