Kalkandere
Kalkandere is a district located in the west of Rize province. The district has an area of 95 km² surrounded by Rize center, İyidere, İkizdere and Of districts of Trabzon province. The distance to the sea coast is 13 kilometers. The district has a very rugged terrain. The entire land is covered with trees and green vegetation. There is almost no flat land. Many large and small streams flow between the valleys in the region. There are many hills with altitudes below 1,000 meters within the district borders. The elevation of the district center above sea level is approximately 200 meters. The oldest known name of the district is Karadere. The black stones in the bed of the stream passing through the district center make the water appear black, which is why the district got this name. Later, this name was changed to Kalkandere. According to another idea, it was called Kalkandere in the meaning of "Swelling Creek", referring to the overflow of the stream bringing abundant water. Its third meaning is to resist evil.
