Karkamış

Karkamış is a district of Gaziantep province.

The district has a Mediterranean climate. Frost is very rare. It is located within the borders of Barak Plain. Its soils are suitable for agriculture. Pistachio and olive production is common. Karkamış district is close to the Euphrates River and water canals pass through the district. Elifoğlu and Keleklioğlu neighborhoods, which are leading in mint production, are connected to Karkamış district. The Euphrates turtle sanctuary is located in the district. The majority of the inhabitants are Turkmen and Arabs also live there. It was called Uruk during the Bronze Age. It is believed that the famous Sumerian epic Gilgamesh was written here and the king of the epic lived in the ancient city near the Euphrates River. Karkamış district is located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. Its surface area is 341,000 m2 and its altitude is 365 meters. It is connected to Gaziantep city center by a 75 km road. Karkamış district is bordered by the Euphrates River to the east, Oğuzeli district to the west, Nizip district to the north, and the Syrian state to the south.
