Kelkit

Kelkit is a district of Gümüşhane province. In the work of the ancient geographer Strabon, there is information that the Appaites living around Pharnakeia (Giresun) and Trapezus (Trabzon) are descendants of the Kerkit people. Based on this information, Bilge Umar stated that the word Kelkit may come from the word Kerka, which is derived from the Luwian words Kar-ka and Kra-ka, meaning Peak Place. Paul Wittek, on the other hand, presented a claim that the Kelkit River has been called Lykos, meaning wolf in Greek, since ancient times, and that the Armenians translated this name as Gail-Get, meaning Wolf River, and that the name Kelkit was derived from here.
