Kulp
Kulp is a district in Diyarbakır province. Its area is 1.601 km². Its population is 35,449 as of 2020. Its distance to Diyarbakır is 135 km.
Located north of Silvan, the district remains under snow for a long time in winter. Founded in a volcanic and steep region with a first degree earthquake zone, Kulp is an old settlement center. The administrative structure consists of a center, a town, 3 sub-districts, 52 villages and 120 hamlets. The district center consists of Merkez Eski neighborhood, Merkez Yeni neighborhood, Yeşilköy neighborhood, Tepecik neighborhood, Erkan neighborhood and Turgut Özal neighborhood. The people are Kurmanj.
Most sources state that the name Kulp dates back to the Khalibs, a mining community.[citation needed] Kulp is also called "Başkale" by locals. It is rumored that this name originated from the 'Kefrum Castle' that past civilizations established in the district. Although it was thought that the name Kulp was taken from an overlord named "Kulpo" who ruled the region, the real source of the name was understood after it was understood from the excavations that the people of the region were very advanced in kulp craftsmanship.
