Piraziz

Piraziz is a district of Giresun province. The majority of the population consists of Turkmen/Chepni. The source of income is mainly hazelnut production. Ordu-Giresun Airport, built on the sea, which is the first in Turkey and Europe and the third in the world, was completed in 2015 and flights started to operate. It is seen that Turks started to settle in the region where Piraziz is located, starting from the 14th century. There is no historical information yet regarding the period of the settlement before the Turks came to the region. However, in the Piraziz district center, there is "Bendehor (Mendehorya) Castle", whose construction date is unknown but is thought to have been built before the arrival of the Turks. There are various rumors about the establishment of the settlement. According to a rumor, Sheikh Idris, with his 40 disciples and their families, set out from Bukhara in 1386, came to Anatolia and then to Bursa, and served as the leader of II. He met with Murad and went to the Black Sea with his companions to spread Islam and settled in Piraziz and its surroundings, which were uninhabited at that time. He was sent to Şeyhli village, one of his disciples, Molla Hasan, was sent to Hasanşeyh village, Pir Aziz was sent to Nefs-i Piraziz village, and Molla Musa was sent to Şeyh Musa village. The central district was named after Molla Pir Aziz, the founder of Nefs-i Piraziz village. In addition to this claim of dubious historical authenticity, there is also the opinion that during the Ottoman period, a lord named Pir Aziz, son of Ibrahim, ruled the region from the village of Nefs-i Piraziz and therefore the region was named Piraziz. The first census record under Ottoman rule dates back to 1455. In these records, Piraziz is seen as a township of Pazarsuyu district of Karahisar-ı Şarki (Şebinkarahisar) sanjak. Piraziz maintains its township status in the 19th century records. According to the 1903/1904 yearbook, except for children in Piraziz township; A total of 11295 people lived there, including 262 Armenians, 2060 Greeks and 8953 Muslims. The center of the region changed over time between Şıhlı-Piraziz-Erenköy, and with the establishment of the weekly market in 1869, the town center was moved to its current location. With an official decision dated 1869, "Abdal İskele Market" was established on Friday. The first mayor of the township whose municipal organization was established in 1892 was Abdullah Bey. In 1934, it was connected to Bulancak as a subdistrict. It gained district status on August 16, 1988.
